Trekking along the Jurassic Coast for Breast Cancer Awareness

Electric House Account Executive, Kimberley Hartwell, treks 42.5 km for CoppaFeel and breast cancer awareness.

In 2019, during her final year of university, Electric House account executive, Kimberley Hartwell, was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I had only gone to the doctors because I thought that something wasn’t right and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. And then, the worst-case scenario was that I did actually have early stages.”

Thankfully, the cancer was caught at the early stages, and we are happy to report that Kimberley is now officially cancer-free, as of 2021. This summer, Kimberley was contacted by breast cancer charity, CoppaFeel, inviting her to partake in a 42.5-kilometre trek along the Jurassic Coast, in order to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

“I said absolutely! There wasn’t any doubt in my mind that I would want to raise money for a charity that had been there for me when I really felt like I was at rock bottom.”

CoppaFeel is a UK charity that exists to create awareness and education of breast cancer checking amongst young people. The earlier the stage that breast cancer is diagnosed, the more effective the treatment, and the higher the survival rate.

To ensure early breast cancer diagnoses, CoppaFeel encourages young people to check their breasts and pecs regularly, educates them on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, and empowers individuals to seek advice from doctors if symptoms persist.

“They also offer a free shower sticker, and it’s a guide about how to check your boobs because a lot of people don’t really know where to start. When you’re showering, it’s easy just to have a quick check whilst you’re there- because you’re already naked in the shower, anyway!

It’s also good to raise awareness for men as well because men can also get breast cancer, which I don’t think is really spoken about. So, even if you’re a bloke thinking, ‘What use would I have for a shower sticker?’ Well, ultimately, you can start checking your pecs, as well. It’s the same scenario.”

If you want to start screening yourself for cancer symptoms but are unsure about where to begin, CoppaFeel offers a free vinyl shower sticker about how to check yourself. Find out more here.
